ধর্মশাস্ত্র কাহাকে বলে, যাজ্ঞবল্ক্যসংহিতায় তাহার নিরূপণ আছে। যথা,
মন্বত্রিবিষ্ণুহারীতযাজ্ঞবল্ক্যোশনোহঙ্গিরাঃ ।
যমাপস্তম্বসংবর্ত্তাঃ কাত্যায়নবৃহস্পতী ।। ১ । ৪ ।।
পরাশরব্যাসশঙ্খলিখিতা দক্ষগোতমৌ ।
শাতাতপো বশিষ্ঠশ্চ ধর্ম্মশাস্ত্রপ্রযোজকাঃ ।। ১ । ৫ ।।
মনু, অত্রি, বিষ্ণু, হারীত, যাজ্ঞবল্ক্য, উশনাঃ, অঙ্গিরাঃ, যম, আপস্তম্ব, সংবর্ত্ত, কাত্যায়ন, বৃহস্পতি, পরাশর, ব্যাস, শঙ্খ, লিখিত, দক্ষ, গোতম, শাতাতপ, বশিষ্ঠ – ইঁহারা ধর্মশাস্ত্রকর্তা।
ইঁহাদের প্রণীত শাস্ত্র ধর্মশাস্ত্র। ইঁহাদের প্রণীত ধর্মশাস্ত্রে যে সকল ধর্ম নিরূপিত হইয়াছে, ভারতবর্ষীয় লোকে সেই সকল ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিয়া থাকেন। সুতরাং, ঐ সকল ধর্মশাস্ত্রের সম্মত কর্ম কর্তব্য কর্ম, ঐ সকল ধর্মশাস্ত্রের বিরুদ্ধ কর্ম অকর্তব্য কর্ম।
এক্ষণে ইহা বিবেচনা করা আবশ্যক, ঐ সমস্ত ধর্মশাস্ত্রে যে সকল ধর্ম নিরূপিত হইয়াছে, সকল যুগেই সে সমুদয় ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতে হইবেক কি না। মনুপ্রণীত ধর্মশাস্ত্রে এ বিষয়ের মীমাংসা আছে। যথা,
অন্যে কৃতযুগে ধর্ম্মাস্ত্রেতায়াং দ্বাপরেহপরে ।
অন্যে কলিযুগে নৃণাং যুগহ্রাসানুরূপতঃ ।। ১ । ৫৮ ।।
যুগানুসারে মনুষ্যের শক্তিহ্রাস হেতু সত্য যুগের ধর্ম অন্য; ত্রেতা যুগের ধর্ম অন্য; দ্বাপর যুগের ধর্ম অন্য; কলি যুগের ধর্ম অন্য।
অর্থাৎ, পূর্ব পূর্ব যুগের লোকেরা যে সকল ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিয়াছিলেন, পর পর যুগের লোক সে সকল ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতে সমর্থ নহেন; যেহেতু, উত্তরোত্তর, যুগে যুগে, মনুষ্যের ক্ষমতার হ্রাস হইয়া যাইতেছে। ত্রেতা যুগের লোকদিগের সত্য যুগের ধর্ম, দ্বাপর যুগের লোকদিগের সত্য অথবা ত্রেতা যুগের ধর্ম, অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিবার ক্ষমতা ছিল না। কলি যুগের লোকদিগের সত্য, ত্রেতা অথবা দ্বাপর যুগের ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতে পারিবার ক্ষমতা নাই। সুতরাং, ইহা স্থির হইতেছে, কলি যুগের লোক পূর্ব পূর্ব যুগের ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতে অক্ষম।
এক্ষণে, এই জিজ্ঞাসা উপস্থিত হইতে পারে, তবে কলি যুগের লোকদিগের কোন ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতে হইবেক। মনুপ্রণীত ধর্মশাস্ত্রে, যুগে যুগে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ধর্ম, এই মাত্র নির্দেশ আছে; ভিন্ন ভিন্ন যুগের ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ধর্মের নিরূপণ করা নাই। অত্রি, বিষ্ণু, হারীত প্রভৃতির ধর্মশাস্ত্রেও যুগভেদে ধর্মভেদ নিরূপিত দেখিতে পাওয়া যায় না। ইঁহাদের ধর্মশাস্ত্রে কতকগুলি ধর্মের নিরূপণ করা মাত্র আছে; কিন্তু যুগে যুগে মনুষ্যের ক্ষমতা হ্রাস হওয়াতে, কোন যুগে কোন ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতে হইবেক, তাহার নির্ণয় হওয়া দুর্ঘট (দুঃসাধ্য)। কোন যুগে কোন ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতে হইবেক, পরাশরপ্রণীত ধর্মশাস্ত্রে সে সমুদয়ের নিরূপণ আছে। পরাশরসংহিতার প্রথম অধ্যায়ে লিখিত আছে,
কৃতে তু মানবা ধর্ম্মাস্ত্রেতায়াং গৌতমাঃ স্মৃতাঃ ।
দ্বাপরে শাঙ্খলিখিতাঃ কলৌ পারাশরাঃ স্মৃতাঃ ।।
মনুনিরূপিত ধর্ম সত্য যুগের ধর্ম, গোতমনিরূপিত ধর্ম ত্রেতা যুগের ধর্ম, শঙ্খলিখিতনিরূপিত ধর্ম দ্বাপর যুগের ধর্ম, পরাশরনিরূপিত ধর্ম কলি যুগের ধর্ম।
অর্থাৎ, ভগবান স্বায়ম্ভুব মনু যে সমস্ত ধর্মের নিরূপণ করিয়াছেন, সত্য যুগের লোকেরা সেই সকল ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতেন। ভগবান গোতম যে সমস্ত ধর্মের নিরূপণ করিয়াছেন, ত্রেতা যুগের লোকেরা সেই সকল ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতেন। ভগবান শঙ্খ ও লিখিত যে সমস্ত ধর্মের নিরূপণ করিয়াছেন, দ্বাপর যুগের লোকেরা সেই সকল ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতেন। আর, ভগবান পরাশর যে সমস্ত ধর্মের নিরূপণ করিয়াছেন, কলি যুগের লোকদিগকে সেই সকল ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতে হইবেক। অতএব, ইহা স্পষ্ট প্রতীয়মান হইতেছে, ভগবান পরাশর কেবল কলি যুগের নিমিত্ত ধর্মনিরূপণ করিয়াছেন এবং কলি যুগের লোকদিগকে তাঁহার নিরূপিত ধর্ম অবলম্বন করিয়া চলিতে হইবেক।
পরাশরসংহিতার যে রূপে আরম্ভ হইতেছে, তাহা দেখিলে, কলি যুগের ধর্মনিরূপণই যে পরাশরসংহিতার উদ্দেশ্য, সে বিষয়ে সংশয়মাত্র থাকিতে পারে না। যথা,
“পূর্ব কালে কতকগুলি ঋষি ব্যাসদেবকে জিজ্ঞাসা করেন, হে সত্যবতীনন্দন! কলি যুগে কোন ধর্ম ও কোন আচার মনুষ্যের হিতকর, আপনি তাহা বলুন। ব্যাসদেব ঋষিবাক্য শ্রবণ করিয়া কহিলেন, আমি সকল বিষয়ের তত্ত্বজ্ঞ নহি, আমি কী রূপে ধর্ম বলিব। এ বিষয়ে আমার পিতাকেই জিজ্ঞাসা করা কর্তব্য। তখন ঋষিরা ব্যাসদেবের সমভিব্যাহারে পরাশরের আশ্রমে উপস্থিত হইলেন।
ব্যাসদেব ও ঋষিগণ কৃতাঞ্জলিপুটে পরাশরকে প্রদক্ষিণ প্রণাম ও স্তব করিলেন। মহর্ষি পরাশর প্রসন্ন মনে তাহাদিগকে স্বাগত জিজ্ঞাসা করিলে, তাহারা আত্মকুশল নিবেদন করিলেন।
অনন্তর ব্যাসদেব কহিলেন, হে পিতঃ! আমি আপনকার নিকট মনু প্রভৃতিনিরূপিত সত্য ত্রেতা ও দ্বাপর যুগের ধর্ম শ্রবণ করিয়াছি। যাহা শ্রবণ করিয়াছি, বিস্মৃত হই নাই। সত্য যুগে সকল ধর্ম জন্মিয়াছিল, কলি যুগে সকল ধর্ম নষ্ট হইয়াছে। অতএব চারি বর্ণের সাধারণ ধর্ম কিছু বলুন। ব্যাসবাক্য সমাপ্ত হইলে, মহর্ষি পরাশর বিস্তারিত রূপে ধর্ম বলিতে আরম্ভ করিলেন।”
পরাশরসংহিতার দ্বিতীয় অধ্যায়ের আরম্ভেও কলিধর্মকথনের প্রতিজ্ঞা স্পষ্ট দৃষ্ট হইতেছে। যথা,
অতঃপরং গৃহস্থস্য ধর্ম্মাচারং কলৌ যুগে ।
ধর্ম্মং সাধারণং শক্যং চাতুর্ব্বর্ণ্যাশ্রমাগতম ।
সং প্রবক্ষ্যাম্যহং পূর্ব্বং পরাশরবচো যথা ।।
অতঃপর গৃহস্থের কলি যুগে অনুষ্ঠেয় ধর্ম ও আচার কীর্তন করিব। পূর্বে পরাশর যেরূপ কহিয়াছিলেন, তদনুসারে চারি বর্ণের ও আশ্রমের অনুষ্ঠানযোগ্য সাধারণ ধর্ম বলিব; অর্থাৎ লোকে কলি যুগে যে সকল ধর্মের অনুষ্ঠান করিতে পারিবেক, এরূপ ধর্ম কহিব।
এই সমুদায় (সকল) দেখিয়া, পরাশরসংহিতা যে কলি যুগের ধর্মশাস্ত্র, এ বিষয়ে আর কোনও আপত্তি অথবা সংশয় করা যাইতে পারে না।
