ইউরোপ তার মিথ্যা বিশ্বাসের কারণে যে সমস্যার মুখোমুখি হয়েছে ইসলাম কখনো হয়নি। ইসলামের ইতিহাসে এমন দৃষ্টান্ত নেই। ইউরোপের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সমস্যা ছিল ধর্ম ও বিজ্ঞানের মধ্যে ভয়াবহ পার্থক্য। ধর্ম ও বিজ্ঞানের প্রচণ্ড বিরোধিতা।
যার ফলে চার্চ অনেক বিজ্ঞানীকে জীবিত পুড়িয়ে দিয়েছে। কারণ, তারা ধর্মীয় বিধি-নিষেধের বিরুদ্ধবাদী ছিল। চার্চের এই বীভৎস নৃশংসতা ও অত্যাচার ইউরোপ জুড়ে আলোড়ন সৃষ্টি করে।যাদের স্বার্থ গির্জার সাথে সম্পৃক্ত ছিল তারা ছাড়া প্রত্যেকে গির্জার প্রতি ঘৃণা শুরু করে। তাদের ঘৃণা এবং বিদ্বেষ এমন পর্যায়ে দাঁড়ায় দুর্ভাগ্যক্রমে তারা পুরো ধর্ম ব্যবস্থাকে উৎখাত করার চিন্তা করে। এবং ধর্মের প্রতি বিদ্রোহী হয়ে ওঠে।
গির্জার বোকামির কারণে ১৫ এবং ১৬ শতাব্দীতে আবেগের এমন দ্বন্দ্ব শুরু হয় যার ফলে ‘পরিবর্তন’-এর আবেগ খাঁটি নাস্তিকতায় প্রবাহিত হয়। দীর্ঘ আন্দোলন ও সংগ্রামের পরে পশ্চিমা বিশ্বে ধর্মনিরপেক্ষতার যাত্রা শুরু হয়।
এই আন্দোলনের পথিকৃৎগণ মহাবিশ্বের সৃষ্টি কর্তার স্বজ্ঞাত প্রমাণ থাকা সত্ত্বেও বিশ্বের পুরো অবকাঠামোকে চিন্তার এই ভিতে দাঁড় করাতে চেয়েছেন যে, পৃথিবীতে যা আছে তা নিছক পদার্থ। বৃদ্ধি, প্রেরণা, অনুভূতি, চেতনা এবং চিন্তাধারা হলো, একই বিকাশযুক্ত প্রাকৃতিক পদার্থের বৈশিষ্ট্য। যা কিছু হয় প্রাকৃতিকভাবেই হয়।
সভ্যতার স্থপতিরা এই দর্শন সামনে রেখে নিজেদের ব্যক্তিগত ও সম্মিলিত জীবন গড়ে তোলেন। প্রত্যেকটা আন্দোলনের শুরু যা এই চিন্তা থেকে করা হয়েছে- রব বলতে কিছু নেই। শরয়ী কোনো দিক-নির্দেশনা নেই । আচার-আচরণে কোন বাধ্যবাধকতা নেই। কেয়ামত- হাশর নেই এবং নেই কোন জবাবদিহিতা। এমন চিন্তা চেতনা ধারণ করে শুরু হওয়া প্রতিটা আন্দোলনকে প্রগতিশীল আন্দোলন বলে চিহ্নিত করা হয়।
এভাবেই ইউরোপ সম্পূর্ণ বিস্তৃত বস্তুবাদের দিকে মুখ ফিরিয়ে নেয়। জীবনের সকল ক্ষেত্রে চিন্তা-চেতনা দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি, মনোবিজ্ঞান, মানসিকতা, নীতিশাস্ত্র এবং সমাজবিজ্ঞান, জ্ঞান-সাধনা, সাহিত্য-শিল্প, সরকার এবং রাজনীতিসহ সবক্ষেত্রে নাস্তিকতা বিজয় লাভ করে। যদিও সবকিছু ধীরে ধীরে ঘটেছিল। শুরুতে অনেক বেশি ধীরগতি ছিল। কিন্তু একসময় নাস্তিকতার ঝড় গোটা ইউরোপকে গ্রাস করে নেয়।
অপরদিকে ইসলামের ইতিহাসে এমন কিছু খুঁজে পাওয়া যায় না। ইসলাম সর্বদা বৈজ্ঞানিক গবেষণার দ্বার উন্মুক্ত রেখেছে। প্রতিদিনের কাজ-কর্মে আরও উৎসাহিত করেছে। বিজ্ঞানীরা সাধারণত অনেক খলিফার দরবার এবং অনুষ্ঠানে বিশেষ মেহমান বিবেচ্য হন। তাদেরকে অনেক পুরস্কার ও আর্থিক সম্মান প্রদর্শন করা হয়। রাজকীয় পৃষ্ঠপোষকতা দেয়া হয়।
মুসলিম বিশ্বের দীর্ঘ ইতিহাসে বিজ্ঞানীদের এমন নৃশংস ভয়াবহ জুলুমের শিকার এবং যাচাই-বাছাইয়ের মুখোমুখি হতে হয়নি। যেমনটা ইউরোপের বিজ্ঞানীরা হয়েছে। চার্চে ধর্মের নামে লোকদের সাথে খারাপ ব্যবহার করা। তাদের সম্পদের বিশাল অংশ কেড়ে নেওয়া। বিজ্ঞানীদের বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিকভাবে সীমাবদ্ধ করে দেওয়া। চিন্তাবিদ ও বুদ্ধিজীবীদের বিপদসংকুল রাস্তা মাড়ানো। ইসলাম কখনো বিজ্ঞানীদের সাথে এমন আচরণ করেনি।
বিপরীতে দেখা যায় ইসলাম ও বিজ্ঞান এর ভেতর বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ সম্পর্ক। সর্বপ্রথম ওহী অবতীর্ণ হয়েছিল “পড়ুন আপনার প্রভুর নামে যিনি আপনাকে সৃষ্টি করেছেন”। বিজ্ঞান ইসলামের অন্যতম একটা দিক। আজকের বিজ্ঞান আল্লাহর আদেশের ফল। পড়া, শিখা, শিখানো এবং চিন্তাভাবনা করার ফল হল বিজ্ঞান।
যারা মুসলিম বিশ্বে ধর্মনিরপেক্ষতা আনতে চাইছেন, তারা ইউরোপের ধর্মীয় ইতিহাসের যেখান থেকে সেকুলারিজম উদ্ভব হয়েছিল এবং মুসলিম বিশ্বের ধর্মীয় ইতিহাসের মধ্যে বিদ্যমান পার্থক্য নির্মমভাবে উপেক্ষা করেন, যা কখনো কাম্য নয়।
