অনেক চেষ্টার পরেও বাঁচানো গেল না ললিতার স্বামীকে। কী এমন বয়স হয়েছিল? বড়জোর ৪০। ললিতার ১৫। না, শাঁখা সিঁদুর ভাঙা হলো না তার। টেনেহিঁচড়ে নেওয়া হলো শ্মশানে। এতদিন ললিতা শ্মশানের নাম শুনলেও ভয় পেত। তেনারা থাকেন শ্মশানে। আজও ললিতার ভয় করছে। শ্মশানকে নয়, তার স্বামীর পরিবারের লোকেদের। চিতায় দাউ দাউ করে জ্বলতে থাকা আগুনে তারা ঠেলে দেবে ললিতাকে সিঁদুরসহ। স্বামীর সাথে স্বর্গবাসী হওয়ার সুযোগ কজন পায়? ললিতার মনে হলো পালিয়ে যায়, একবার যদি পালিয়ে শ্মশানের আঁধারে হারিয়ে যাওয়া যায়, তাকে খুঁজে পাবে এরা?
মানুষের চাইতে প্রেতাত্মা বেশি ভরসার মনে হলো। না, পালাতে পারবেনা ও। শক্ত করে ধরে রাখা হয়েছে। মৃত্যুকে সহজভাবে মেনে নেওয়ার চেষ্টা করলো। কতটুকুই বা যন্ত্রণা হবে? সেবার রাঁধতে গিয়ে খালি হাতে কড়াই ধরেছিল। সেই যন্ত্রণার কথা মনে আসতে গেলে জোর করে তাড়িয়ে দিতে চাইলো। সোজাসুজি স্বর্গ, মাঝে কোনো বাধা নেই। শান্ত হয়ে চিতায় বসলো। সবাই ভাবল কী লক্ষীমন্ত মেয়ে!
উপরের অংশের চরিত্র কাল্পনিক। কিন্তু এরকম লাখো ললিতার আগুনে পুড়ে যাওয়ার গল্পগুলো কাল্পনিক নয়। কতটা যন্ত্রণা নিয়ে তাদের মারা যেতে হয় এই ভাবনাটা মনে উদয় হতে যতটুকু মানবতা দরকার, তা আসতে সময় লেগে গিয়েছিল অনেকখানি।
‘সতী’ নামটা এসেছিল দেবী সতীর থেকে। তিনি ছিলেন রাজা দক্ষের কন্যা, একইসাথে দেবাদিদেব শিবের স্ত্রী। দক্ষ মেনে নিতে পারেননি তার মেয়ে কোনো শ্মশানবাসী ভবঘুরেকে বিয়ে করবে। একদিন সতীর সামনেই শিবকে কঠোর ভাষায় দক্ষ তিরস্কার করলে স্বামীর অপমান সহ্য না করতে পেরে সতী আত্মহনন করেন। মৃত স্বামীর সাথে চিতায় ওঠার এই প্রথার নাম সতী লিখেছিলেন এংলো-ইন্ডিয়ান লেখকরা। আসলে একে বলা হত ‘সহগমন’, ‘সহমরণ’ বা ‘সতীদাহ’। ‘সতীব্রত’ বলে এক প্রথা চালু ছিল, যেখানে নারী তার স্বামীকে কথা দিত, স্বামী যদি আগে গত হয়, তবে সেও সহমরণে যাবে। সতীপ্রথা পালন করা হলে নারীকে বলা হত ‘সতীমাতা’।
সতীদাহের কোনো আদেশ বেদে নেই বলে জানা যায়, বরং মরণোত্তর স্ত্রীকে স্বাভাবিক জীবন পার করতেও বলা হয়েছে। সনাতন ধর্মের পুরাণে বহু চরিত্র আছেন যারা স্বামীর মৃত্যুর পর বহাল তবিয়তে বেঁচে ছিলেন। কিন্তু সহমরণ কোনো নতুন বিষয় ছিল না, এমনও নয় যে ভারতে প্রথম এমন প্রথা চালু হয়েছিল, কিংবা ভারতকে দিয়েই শেষ হয়েছে। খ্রিস্টপূর্ব ৩০০ অব্দের সহমরণের বর্ণনাও পাওয়া গেছে। তাহলে কিভাবে সতীদাহ এত প্রচলিত হয়ে পড়লো?
কোনো পরিবার থেকে একজন নারী সতী হওয়া মানে বিরাট সম্মানের বিষয়। একজন নারীর তার স্বামীর প্রতি চূড়ান্ত অধীনতা, সতীত্ব ও ধর্মপরায়ণতার লক্ষণ ছিল এই প্রথা। ছেলের মৃত্যুর পর তার বউ বাড়িতে থাকা আলাদা একটা বোঝার মতোন ছিল। স্বভাবতই সব পরিবার চাইত তাদের বউটিও সহমরণে গিয়ে তার এই স্বল্পদামী জীবনের বিনিময়ে পরিবারের সম্মান বাড়াক।
কিন্তু দেখা যেত অনেক ছোট বয়সে বিধবা হয়ে গেছে, স্বামীর মৃত্যুতে হতবিহবল হলেও শোকের মাতম তোলার কারণ নেই। আবার বউটি বেশ বিষয়বুদ্ধিসম্পন্ন। পরলোকের প্রতিশ্রুতির চেয়ে বড় তার কাছে আরো কিছুক্ষণের জন্য বেঁচে থাকা। এমন সব নারীরা চিতায় ওঠার আগে বেঁকে বসতো। আসলে খুব কম নারীই ছিল যারা দাউ দাউ করে জ্বলতে থাকা আগুনের দিকে পরলোকের মোহে পড়ে স্বতঃস্ফূর্তভাবে এগিয়ে যেত। কেউ কেউ চিৎকার করে কাঁদত, ছেড়ে দিতে বলত। এই আওয়াজ যেন কেউ না শোনে তাই শবযাত্রীরা ঢোল, মাদল, বাঁশির আওয়াজে ভরিয়ে তুলত। অনিচ্ছুক মেয়েদের খাওয়ানো হত আফিম জাতীয় ওষুধ, যেন তারা অজ্ঞান হয়ে পড়ে। কাউকে মাথার পেছন দিকে আঘাত করে অজ্ঞান করে ফেলা হত। লক্ষ্য রাখা হত আঘাত আবার এত জোরে না হয় যাতে মেয়েটা মরেই যায়। রীতি অনুযায়ী জীবিত পোড়াতে হবে। তাহলেই স্ত্রী পরবর্তী জন্মে উঁচু বংশে জন্মাতে পারবে, ভাগ্য ভালো হলে এই স্বামীর স্ত্রী হয়েই।
পরের জন্মে সম্মান অথবা সমাজে দর্প করে বেড়ানোর আশায় ১৫০০ সাল থেকে ১৮০০ সাল পর্যন্ত কয়েক হাজার নারীকে জীবিত পুড়িয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে স্বামীর চিতায়।
সহমরণে যাওয়ার কিছু নিয়ম ছিল। এর মাঝে ছিল যারা সহমরণে যেতে পারবে না তাদের তালিকা- যদি কোনো নারীর সন্তান এতই ছোট হয় যে নিজের দেখাশোনা করতে পারে না, যদি কোনো নারী মাসিক চলার সময়ে থাকেন, যদি তার গর্ভে বাচ্চা থাকে। মুঘল শাসন শুরু হওয়ার পর থেকে সহমরণ বন্ধ করার চেষ্টা করেছিলেন সম্রাটরা, বাদ সাধলো ‘ধর্মীয় অনুভূতিতে আঘাত হানা’র অভিযোগ। শিশুর মাকে সহমরণে যেতে না দেওয়ার নিয়ম বেঁধে দিয়েছিলেন সম্রাট শাহজাহান। বাদশাহরা নিয়ম করেন, কাউকে দিয়ে সতীদাহ পালন করাতে হলে তার অনুমতি নিতে হবে। কিন্তু বাদশাহরা যেহেতু মাঠপর্যায়ে অনুসন্ধানে নামতেন না, প্রজাদের সুখ দুঃখের সাথে মিশে যেতে পারতেন না, স্বামীর পরিবার ঘুষ দিয়ে অনুমতি আদায় করে নিত।
উইলিয়াম কেরি আর রামমোহন রায়দের মতো মানুষ না আসলে এই ভয়ংকর প্রথা হয়তো আরো অনেক দশক চলতো। উইলিয়াম কেরি ছিলেন একজন ব্যাপ্টিস্ট মিশনারী, এসেছিলেন ইংল্যান্ড থেকে। ১৭৯৯ সালে তার এক নারীর সহমরণ দেখার সুযোগ হয়েছিল। এই দৃশ্যে তার আত্মা কেঁপে ওঠে। এই আচার বন্ধ না করা পর্যন্ত স্বস্তির নিঃশ্বাস ফেলবেন না ঠিক করেন। তিনি ও তার দুই সহকর্মী জোশু মার্শম্যান ও উইলিয়াম ওয়ার্ড মিলে সতীদাহ বন্ধের জন্য উপর মহলের দ্বারে দ্বারে ঘুরতে শুরু করেন। তৎকালীন গভর্নর জেনারেল লর্ড ওয়েলেসলির কাছে তারা সতীদাহের সমস্ত বিবরণ উল্লেখ করে সতীদাহ বিরোধী নিবন্ধ লিখে পাঠান।
১৮১২ সালে রামমোহন রায় সতীদাহবিরোধী আন্দোলন শুরু করেন। তিনি দেখেছিলেন তার বৌদিকে জোর করে চিতায় তুলতে। শ্মশানে শ্মশানে ঘুরে তিনি মৃতের বাড়ির লোকজনকে বোঝানোর চেষ্টা চালিয়ে যান। ব্রাহ্ম সমাজের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা হিসেবে এই কাজে আরো অনেক অনুসারী জুটিয়ে নেওয়া কষ্টের ছিল না। এদের মাঝে দল তৈরি করে দেন, যাতে তারাও বিভিন্ন শ্মশানে যেতে পারে। তিনি তার লেখায় প্রমাণ করেন, হিন্দুশাস্ত্র সতীদাহের কথা বলে না। ১৮১৫-১৮ সালে সতীদাহ প্রথা বিকট আকার ধারণ করলে রামমোহন রায় ১৮২১ সালে একটি পুস্তিকা আর উইলিয়াম কেরি ১৮২৩ সালে একটি বই প্রকাশ করেন। কোম্পানি মূলত গোড়াদের চটাতে চাইতো না। তাই শক্তভাবে সতীদাহবিরোধী কিছু হয়নি। কলকাতাকে পর্যবেক্ষণে রাখা হলেও আশেপাশের বহু এলাকাতে সতীদাহ চলতে থাকে।
১৮২৮ সালে লর্ড উইলিয়াম বেন্টিঙ্ক অনেক দায়িত্ব মাথায় করে ভারতের গভর্নর হয়ে আসেন। বেন্টিঙ্ক এই প্রথা বন্ধে আর এক মুহূর্তও যেন দেরি করতে পারছিলেন না। চার্লস মেটকাফে বেন্টিঙ্ককে বলেন, ভারতে ইংরেজ রাজত্বের অবস্থা বিশেষ ভালো নয়। সতীদাহ বন্ধ করলে বিদ্রোহীরা বিপ্লবের সুযোগ খুঁজতে পারে। বেন্টিঙ্কের কাছে বিপ্লবের ভয়ের চেয়ে বড় হয়ে দেখা দিয়েছিল বিধবাদের জীবন।
৪ ডিসেম্বর, ১৮২৯ সাল। লর্ড বেন্টিঙ্ক আইন জারি করে সতীদাহ নিষিদ্ধ ও সতীদাহের সাথে জড়িত ব্যক্তিদের ফৌজদারি আদালতে শাস্তির ব্যবস্থা করেন। এর অনুবাদের দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয় উইলিয়াম কেরিকে। ধার্মিক কেরি সেদিন তার চার্চ বাদ দিয়েছিলেন অনুবাদ করার জন্য। তার মনে হয়েছিল, অনুবাদ করার দেরির জন্য একজন বিধবার প্রাণ গেলেও সেটা তার দায়। ১৮৩০ সালের মাঝে বোম্বে ও মাদ্রাজেও আইনের হাত প্রসারিত হয়। বাংলা, বিহার, উড়িষ্যার কয়েক হাজার সনাতন ধর্মাবলম্বী পিটিশন করেন এই আইনের বিরুদ্ধে। তাদের মতে, ইংরেজ সরকার তাদের ধর্মীয় বিষয়ে নাক গলাবার চেষ্টা করছে। ব্যাপারটা লন্ডনের প্রিভি কাউন্সিল পর্যন্ত গড়ালে রামমোহন রায় উল্টো আইনের পক্ষে পিটিশন করেন। প্রিভি কাউন্সিল আইনের পক্ষে মত দেয়।
তখনও ভারতের সব অঞ্চল সতীদাহ বিরোধী আইন করেনি। ভারতে পুরোপুরি সতীদাহ আইন করে বন্ধ করতে ১৮৬১ সাল পর্যন্ত লেগে যায়।
তারপরও অনেক দিন পর্যন্ত এই কুপ্রথা টিকে ছিল। কিন্তু ক্রমে জনগণের মাঝে সতীদাহ বিরোধী সচেতনতা তুঙ্গে ওঠে। মহারাজা স্বরূপ সিং মারা গেলে তার কোনো স্ত্রীই তার সাথে সহমরণে যেতে রাজি হয়নি।
প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলের দিকে আইন জারি করে সতীদাহ বন্ধ করা যায়নি। লুকিয়ে সতীদাহ চলছিলই। তবে প্রথাটি যখন সামাজিক নিন্দার শিকার হতে শুরু করে, তখন ধীরে ধীরে ভারত থেকে সতীদাহের মতো দুই সহস্রবর্ষের কুপ্রথা একেবারে বিলুপ্ত হয়।
